Biblical Basis For Baptism
It represents and proclaims four very important points:
Scriptural baptism proclaims the Christ’s power in our lives. “having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.” Colossians 2:12
Scriptural baptism proclaims the death to our old life to sin, and our resurrection to walk in a new life. “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” Romans 6:4
Scriptural baptism proclaims our faith God and our desire to make Him known. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit...” Matthew 28:19
Scriptural baptism proclaims our “desire” to fully live for Jesus Christ. “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” Galatians 3:26,27
Baptism is a picture that proclaims what transpired when a person has placed their faith and trust in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the saving and forgiveness of sin (Romans 6:3-5). It does not cleanse us from sin, only the blood of Christ can do this (I John 1:7; Colossians 1:14).
