Bible Quotes for Christening/Baptism

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Romans 6:3

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4

Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. Colossians 2:12

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16:16

And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the  Lord.Acts 22:16

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38

Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Acts 8:13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Acts 2:41

And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. John 3:23

Mark 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Mark 1:5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

Matthew 3:1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, Matthew 3:2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matthew 3:3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Matthew 3:4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. Matthew 3:5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, Matthew 3:6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

Christening Gowns in Linens

If you are having your baby christened in a warm climate, take a look at the array of christening gowns in linens that are available. Linen is a very light fabric which can look formal if starched, or less formal but not less beautiful if left natural. For christening gowns Phoenix in Arizona for example, linen would be a perfect choice.

Un-starched linen is such a soft fabric that it lends itself to beautiful decoration so that elaborately embroidered or smocked christening gowns can be made with it. White linen looks clean, fresh and cool so that any baby christened in a linen gown should look unaffected by the heat.

Comfort is Necessary for the Baby at a Christening

A baby's christening is for many families the first big event in the child's life. It's the first chance that many friends and relatives get to see the baby and so the choosing the perfect christening gown for the occasion is a big decision. One of the most important factors to consider for the christening gown is that it's comfortable for the baby to wear.

Many babies object to be handled by strangers, and even more object to having water poured over their heads, so adding fussy frills and un-necessarily uncomfortable clothes isn't going to make the baby very happy. A happy baby is a content baby and a content baby is far more likely to put up with the other events of the day so make sure that the christening gown you choose makes the baby feel comfortable. It shouldn't be too restrictive, or too heavy. Choose a gown that fits the climate at the time of the christening, and if possible, choose a gown that can have small stains sponged off!

Christening Gifts From a Godmother

By ChristinaS, eHow Contributor
updated: November 1, 2010

Parents award the honor of godmother to a close friend or relative of the same religious faith who agrees to play an active role in the child's spiritual development. Historically, the godmother also agreed to raise the child should the parents be unable to do so; but today that is not automatically the case. Given the spiritual support role of godmother, a godchild's christening gifts traditionally relate to further education in the Christian faith.

A cross is perhaps the most traditional gift from a godmother to her godchild. Not only does it symbolize the meaning of the ceremony, but a well-made cross can become a family heirloom for when the baby has children of his own. Most Christian stores offer a variety of cross styles and sizes. Consider a child-friendly design, such as a cross with colorful pictures of birds and animals around the edges. Avoid future accidents by choosing a cross that hangs high on the wall instead of resting on a dresser where it could be knocked over.

Children's Bible

Many children learn Bible stories well before they are able to read. Reading a picture Bible is a great way to spend time with your baby godchild and expose her naturally to the tenements of the Christian faith. As the child grows, she will take pride in reading out loud the same stories you once read to her. Look for a book with thick, cardboard pages to prevent tearing, and tangible pictures -- such as fuzzy sheep and gritty sand -- to encourage your godchild's participation in the story.

Baby Bracelet

For a baby of either gender, a christening bracelet is a treasured christening gift. For a girl, consider a freshwater pearl or birthstone bracelet with a medallion or cross charm. For a baby boy, try a sterling silver chain bracelet with a christening medallion or cross charm as well. As the child grows he can have the bracelet restrung onto a necklace as an enduring reminder of his relationship to you and God's love.

Irish Christening Gowns & the Irish Tradition

Aren't Irish christening gowns just beautiful, and what about the tradition that surrounds the Irish christening.  Irish tradition, like any other, comes with its own variations. The good thing about tradition of any form, is that it can be adapted to suit your own needs.

Irish symbols

Symbolism on the christening gown is a personal choice. There are many Irish symbols that can be applied to a gown. From ancient Celtic spirals to the exquisite claddaugh. Research the symbols and you'll find that they have hidden depths and meanings, but for now, here's some basic Celtic symbol descriptions.

Celtic Knots, believed to protect against evil. The more complex the knotting, the greater the protection.

Celtic spirals, believed to be the balance between the inner and the outer consciousness.

Celtic tree of life delivers wisdom, and is also believed to deliver messages from the gods.

Celtic cross, believed to signify the four directions of the wind, and the four seasons.

Shamrock, one of the favorite Irish symbols. The symbol of trinity.

Claddaugh, the symbol of love and friendship.

The tradition behind the Irish christening gown

The Irish believe that for daughters, the christening gown should be one of the three white dresses that she will wear in her lifetime. Her christening/baptism gown, communion/confirmation gown, and of course her wedding gown. All should be white as this symbolizes, purity, joy and new life.

An old Irish custom is to make the christening gown from the mother’s bridal gown. Using lace or fabric from the veil, or other parts of the wedding gown. This is normally made by the mother.

A mother’s first-born child is said to wear part of the bridal gown for her christening, and then when the child marries, part of the christening gown will be re sewn back into the bridal gown!

All of this represents the threads binding together the different generations.

This tradition of course comes with its variations, one of which is that the mother makes her child's christening gown from her own bridal dress, and this then gets handed down through the generations as a family heirloom, rather than being recast into the wedding dress.

Many Irish christening gowns are hand embroidered with symbols. They could have panels made from the old Cluney lace (lace that is so delicate and airy, it resembles crochet stitches) Or it could be made from fine Irish silk or old Irish linen. The beauty of the Irish gown is partly the tradition that lies behind it.

What if you don't have your own gown to hand down through the generations? What if you don't fancy chopping up your wedding dress to make a christening gown! Don't worry, there are plenty of places out there that are perfecting the art of making Irish christening gowns, and then you could start handing that down through your own family, and make your own tradition.
