Welcome to the Family:
Religious Naming Ceremonies for the New Baby
Naming ceremonies cross all religious and national boundaries. The tradition of embracing a new life as part of the community began in ancient times, when early humans believed that a child was a gift of the gods and there was no concept of exactly how the gift was bestowed.
In modern times, there is more knowledge about the process of how the tiny new life began, but the miracle of a birth is still cause for celebration in the family and the community. Religious naming ceremonies take on different forms depending on the faith of the parents, but they all have some common features based on this universal heritage.
Welcome the child into the community
The birth of a child is a proud moment for the mother and father. The extended family, the larger community of friends and neighbors and the congregation that the parents worship with all share the joy at the news. The bris, christening, baptism or naming ceremony of each faith all serve the purpose of welcoming the new member of the community. In part it is an introduction, but a bit of the ceremony stems from the concept that each adult present at the ceremony is in part responsible for the care of the child. This is the reason that gifts are given at these ceremonies.
Announce the names that have been chosen
Choosing the name of the new baby is not a simple task. In some cultures the name of the parent or a respected friend or relative is given to the child. Other cultures give the name of a deceased relative to honor the memory of the ancestors. In other cultures, the religious elders are consulted to provide a name that will bring good fortune to the child. No matter what method if used, the choice of the given name is important and the naming ceremony serves to identify this new baby as someone who exists as a unique individual - with a name that has meaning. Often, the meaning of the name is explained as part of the ceremony.
Make promises of commitment to the child
The adults who are chosen to attend religious naming celebrations are usually close to the parents. They are either related by birth or have become close through friendship or shared beliefs. This is the core of the community that the new baby belongs to. These are the adults who will share and shape the future of the child. Being asked to participate in these ceremonies is an honor, but also a commitment.
Choose other adults to provide for the child
In most religious ceremonies, a godparent or godparents are chosen. Although all of the adults are committed to cherish and care for the new baby, the role of godparent is more serious. They promise that they will make sure that the child is taken care of and raised in the faith if for some reason the parents are not able to do this. Being a godparent is not something that should be entered into lightly.
So the next time you are asked to attend a naming ceremony, respond with the knowledge that you are following a tradition that goes back to the dawn of mankind. You are the recipient of a special honor and carry a special responsibility to share in the nurturing of a new life.

Giving Jewelry As Christening Presents
Giving the gift of jewelry is a way to give precious christening presents. Be it silver or gold, many people appreciate the tradition behind the jewelry. While it is not that common to give little boys this type of present, baby girls are the usual recipient of these after the christening.
To start, some people give charm bracelets. With a charm bracelet the child can grow into it. Unlike a silver bracelet which the child can grow out of very soon! You also get the benefit of adding charms to it as the child grows, each piece expressing your love and hope for her future.
As they grow up and have various life events, a new charm can commemorate them and enhance your bond. Don't be alarmed if they do not always wear it though - such a precious christening gift could get destroyed, so they are best left as a keepsake as the child matures.
Are the child's ears pierced? If so consider giving some earrings. Earrings with pearls on a stud would look good. Silver studs would be very nice too.
For necklaces, some people choose to give A St. Christopher necklace to the child. The symbolism is that St. Christopher can protect the child on his life's journeys.
As with any gift though, be aware that the child will soon outgrow the present. This is not to say they do like it, or would not appreciate you buying it. Rather, it's just that as kids grow they will stop wearing them - but don't fret, they will still keep them and look back as adults with a fondness for their christening presents.

Christening Invitations
By: John Bottash
Your baby's christening or baptism is a very special occasion. It is their introduction into their community of faith and most parents want to make a it a celebration. Getting ready for a Christening can be time-consuming - there's the church date, service details , guest lists, and reception not to mention the child's christening outfit - the list goes on and on and on...
Being a busy parent trying to organize your child's christening why not save yourself some time by ordering personalized invitations online. They are quicker and easier than traditional shop-bought invitations which require you to hand-write the date, time, location and RSVP details onto each individual invitation. Personalized Christening invitations are available in many different designs and colors and most companies will allow you to fully customize the invitations with the christening date, location and details of the reception. Depending on the design of invitation you choose you can also add photographs of your child along with personal sentiments, short bible verses or even a favorite line from a poem. There is even the option of ordering matching Thank You cards to send out after the event to thank them for their help in celebrating your child's special day and for the gifts they have given. Ordering personalized christening invitations allows you to make your child's day as special and unique as they are.
Customized Christening invitations also can be kept as an exquisite reminder of the day. (Just get it framed and it will go perfectly on the wall.) Add it to the scrapbook or photo album of the Christening and it will make a beautiful keepsake for your child to look back on when they are older.

Christening Reception Decoration/Finishing Touches
Whether you are having your reception at home or in a function room, a few key decorative items can really liven the place up, hide unwanted or unsightly areas and make all the difference to the atmosphere of your celebration.
Flowers
As simple or as complex as you want them to be, use flowers to continue a style or theme or add a splash of color. Simple structural flowers such as gerberas, sunflowers can look contemporary without being too adult. Pretty English flowers such as freesias, peonies and roses can be used to complement a more traditional style celebration.
Bunting, Garlands & Banners
Quickly liven up even the most uninspiring room or venue with garlands or banners. Colorful fabric bunting looks fabulous draped round the garden for a summer party at home - perfect for a shabby chic or vintage look. Paper lanterns dotted around the room or hanging from tree branches are an inexpensive way of adding color and interest. For a fun and economical way of brightening up your party, create your own custom printed personalized banner.
Table Decoration
Simple posies or balloons look great as table centerpieces for a sit down lunch or to brighten up the buffet table. Don’t forget a table plan and place names for a formal seating arrangement.
Favors and Party Bags
"Bomboniere" or almond favors originated in France and Italy centuries ago and were traditionally given to the female guests at weddings and christenings. The five sugared almonds symbolize health, wealth, fertility, happiness and long life. These days, favors can be any small gift.

The History of Christenings
People were christened from the earliest times in the Church. When Christ gave the Great Commission for all men to be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the Christian church took on the message to spread salvation to the whole world.
When families read passages like Acts 16, they begin to come to an understanding of the importance of baptizing the whole household. The whole household also means children. Children need to be baptized, per biblical instruction, and this is called infant baptism. Some call it pedobaptism, paedobaptism, a christening, or a child baptism. Whatever the term, the practice remains remarkably consistent across diverse cultures and time periods that have partaken of the Christian faith.
It used to be that families gathered in home churches in the very early Church. Church worship was concealed and suppressed because the authorities could get angry and place Christians in prison. For that reason, church worship went underground into regular homes. Church services were more congregational, less formal, not hierarchal, and fully involving of all the members of the church, usually in a home. The best thing about christening invitations is that they can resuscitate this sense of togetherness and camaraderie by bringing together all members of the Christian faith.
As time wore on, people gathered into churches with a head priest. They were able to do this because authorities no longer took the time out to put Christian worship to the test with persecutions, floggings, beatings, hangings, and other forms of persecution, peril, and plight. Since people could now gather into churches, the priest began doing all the baptisms. He performed baptisms on children too. The baby is sprinkled with water, a few phrases are said over it, and the baby then has some symbolic or literal effect take place in his life.
The family members of the baby are grateful to the priest and the other members of the church in attendance. Because ceremonies were public, infant baptisms started happening more frequently. Beforehand, there weren't facilities or priests to perform the rite. For this reason, it is mostly the Roman Catholic Church, and associated hierarchal, extremely structured churches, that perform the rite.
The practice really took hold after the 2nd and 3rd century A.D. The 1st century saw little infant baptism, and centuries afterward increased it tenfold, then hundredfold, then a thousand fold. Eventually, most churches were taking on the practice for their church procedures. Now, you can spread the message to friends and family with christening invitations.

A Lot of Thought Should Go Into Choosing a Baby Christening Gown
A baby's christening ceremony requires a lot of preparation. There's the date to set, godparents to choose, a location to settle on, a reception to prepare afterward, and of course a christening baby gown to purchase. Baby boys and baby girls both will look absolutely precious and adorable in a baby christening gown
The gown is often the most exciting purchase related to a christening ceremony. After all, the focus of this special event is on your baby, so of course you will want him or her to look their best.
Typically, a christening baby gown is pure white, and made out of cotton, silk, smooth satin or soft, delicate organza. White is the preferred color since it symbolizes innocence and purity. Gowns can be worn by both baby boys and baby girls, though special rompers and suits are available for those parents who wish to find alternative apparel for their baby boys.
Many family traditions start from the purchase of a christening gown, so it's important to choose a high quality and heirloom quality christening baby gown. When you are considering christening gowns for purchase, you should also think about the time of year you will be having the christening ceremony during. Spring and summer christening ceremonies dictate baby christening gowns made of light, breathable materials, whereas fall and winter ceremonies would typically use heavier, warmer christening gowns. Sleeve length, weight of the christening gown and the material it is constructed from should all be appropriate for the particular season.
Once you have the basics planned for the baby christening gown, it's time to let your heart and desires go shopping! You should truly love the gown you decide upon and be very excited over the prospect of seeing your baby in it.
In addition to the christening baby gown, you'll also want to shop for a few accessories. First, there's the bonnet to consider. Most christening baby gowns are meant to be paired with a matching or complementing baby bonnet. Cross embroidered bonnets and fancy bonnets with ribbons and bows always make beautiful choices. Shoes and socks frequently come in white, and also make great accessories for your choice of christening baby gown. A blanket or a shawl would be appropriate for cooler weather, or for photography purchases.
Another addition to a beautiful christening gown, many parents adorn baby girls with tiny, infant- appropriate jewelry items, including bracelets, necklaces and earrings. A Little Baby’s First Bible, a baby wall cross, little angelic figurines and any number of religious items to celebrate this very special occasion for baby.
Finally, bibs and towels are also common accessories that are paired with a christening baby gown. A bib will protect a delicate gown from the baby drool and potential spit-up. A keepsake towel can be used to dry the baby’s head after the ceremony.

Looking For A Boy Christening Outfit? Don’t Panic Because There Are Choices Galore
A comment that I frequently hear from friends and relatives is that it is so much easier to shop for a little girl, than it is to shop for a little boy. Many may feel this is true when shopping for a boy Christening outfit, too. Rest assured, however, that this is not the case today. Available in a variety of fashions are the cutest and most adorable little Christening outfits. Whether you are looking for something traditional, heirloom or modern, there is a style that your little boy will look absolutely beautiful in his boy Christening outfit for his special day.
While a boy Christening outfit is becoming more popular for Christenings many parents still opt for the traditional gowns as they just don’t know about what other choices are available. Today it is very common to see little boys wearing coveralls, rompers, knickers, or tuxedos. Each of these options is equally formal and sure to make your little one look like an innocent angel ready to be blessed and welcomed into God’s family.
The only disadvantage to buying a boy christening outfit is that it can’t be passed down to a girl, if you have more children. Most Christening outfits are made with the finest of fabrics and sewn with attention to detail. Often the boy’s outfits can be accessorized with hats, jackets, sweaters, bow ties, bibs, socks, shoes and blankets. There are so many choices available that you really only need to decide on the style you prefer and what you are willing to spend.
A gorgeous boy christening outfit is the perfect way to create beautiful memories for a special day! Baby’s Christening day is a special occasion that is celebrated by the whole family. It is only fitting that your little boy be dressed in the finest of outfits, made by the best fabrics and sewn with care. The Christening gown industry is a thriving one because people recognize the importance of this day and want their children to follow in the tradition of wearing the symbolic white garment. Rest assured that you won’t be disappointed by the choices available as you search for the perfect outfit for your little angel.

Broadening our view of Baptism
Baptism—and all sacraments, for that matter—are much more than the moment of celebration. They neither begin nor end with the liturgical ritual. They are celebrations of lived experiences. They exist before, during and after the celebration.
The ritual of Baptism does not bring God's love into being as if that love did not exist before the ceremony. Baptism is the Church's way of celebrating and enacting the embrace of God who first loved us from the moment of our conception. Baptism is a ritualization and manifestation of something real—of the outpouring of God's Spirit and of our acceptance of that transforming love. It remains for us to grow into what we already are: daughters and sons of God. Baptism celebrates a family's and a community's experience of that love in the baptized.

Should You Send Christening/Baptism Invitations?
Have you decided yet if you are going to send out christening or baptism invitations? This is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration and deserves to be announced in formal style.
Christening/Baptism invitations provide your family and friends with all the details of this once-in-a-lifetime event making them an important part of your planning. Shopping online and having them printed by a professional printer will ultimately save you time so you only have to address them for mailing to your guests. Online invitation websites typically have a nice selection of christening and baptism invitations.
TIP – It’s usually cheaper to initially order a few more invitations than to have to order more later. Additional christening/baptism invitations can be used for extra guests not originally included in your count, and be sure to save at least one of the invitations as a souvenir. It can be framed, placed in a memory album or added to your baby’s scrapbook.
Here are the details to include on your christening or baptism invitations.
- Baby’s Name
- Parents’ Names
- Date and Time of Baptism or Christening Ceremony
- Name and Address of Ceremony Location
- Time and Location of Reception (if separate from ceremony)
If you are planning a formal celebration and inviting quite a few guests, you might want to include some type of RSVP on the invitation to help in your seating and food planning. This can range from placing your phone number at the bottom of the invitation to actually including a separate response card that would be mailed back by your guests. When ordering baptism invitations through a professional printer, some of the formal styles may have a matching response card available. If you do include a response card with your invitation, be sure to place a postage stamp on its accompanying envelope as a convenience to your guests. Your address will already be printed on the envelope for return mailing.
Thank you or informal note cards are sometimes also available to match your invitations when ordering from a professional printer. Informal note cards will have your baby’s name printed on the front with the inside being blank for your handwritten thank you note.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion for your baby so you’ll want to formally announce all the details to family and friends with special christening or baptism invitations. Remember to save one as a lasting keepsake for you and your baby.

Christening Ceremony: What it is all about
By: Elizabeth Ellis
Christians have many rites that mark certain stages or transition in their lives. One of these rites is baptism when water is put on the forehead of the baby to symbolize the baby has joined the Church or becoming a Christian. Parents are free to choose whether they want to hold a grand celebration out of it, or just throwing a simple reception. In early times, baptism has to take place in moving water to symbolize the movement of the Holy Spirit in human life. Nowadays, baptism ceremony normally take place in the church with a priest leading the ritual.
Whether you are hosting the party or being a guest, you must know a thing or two about gifts-giving. As a host, you may wish to prepare thank-you gifts for all your guests. The gift does not necessarily have to be big and expensive; a small thoughtful present is equally appreciated too. As a guest, you may pick gift items that have religious connotations, in line with the baptism theme. Like baby showers, the host and guests must know the importance of gift giving as a sign of gratitude and well-wishes. Once you have decided on the type of ceremony you like to organize, you can proceed to do the necessary matters such as fixing the date, contacting the church and booking the venue for the reception.
Godfather and godmother are essential elements in a baptism ceremony. Parents of the baby must choose godparents for their child. The decision can be made earlier and the godparents are informed about it. Normally parents would appoint one godmother and one godfather for their child. In other places, the arrangement may be different. The decision is entirely for the parents to make. Parents will need to inform the godparents about their decision. Normally parents would appoint their closest and most trusted friends as godparents to their baby. Godparents also bear the responsibility as guardians of the child. Parents may choose to hold the ceremony indoors or outdoors. Garden party on a sunny, pleasant day would be nice. Reception can also be held in hotels and private clubs.
Last minute invitations are not always good. It is recommended that invitation cards are sent out to the guests as early as two weeks prior to the event. They will be grateful to the host for informing them early. The guests can make the necessary arrangements and preparation to attend the ceremony. If for whatsoever reason the guest could not attend, he/she may inform the host about it. This also allow the host to make necessary arrangements like confirming seats booking at the restaurant and preparing door gifts.
It has always been a custom for the baby to wear white gown for the baptism ceremony. Other than the shades of white, cream or peach are acceptable too. Parents can hire a tailor to custom the gown for their baby, or they may use the family heirloom, gown that has been passed down from previous generations.
The baptism ceremony will not take longer than an hour. After the ceremony ends, guests are treated to a reception at a venue of the host's choice. It may be held indoors or outdoors, depending on the host's style, preference and budget. Unless the reception is held in the host's own home, he may have to reserve the venue early to avoid any glitches later.
Normally after the baptism ritual finish, guests will be invited to savor the foods being prepared especially for the occasion. Delightful treats like onion rings, shrimp and cuttlefish balls, and crab meat rolls, variety of salads with Parmesan cheese, French pastries, ice creams and cocktails are sure to entice guests. However, if the host wishes to be more economical, he may opt for home-cooked meals with the assistance of family members, relatives and helpful friends.
It is a good idea to prepare thank-you cards and presents a week or few days prior to the baptism ritual. Gifts are expressions of the host's appreciation for their guests. It is very thoughtful of the host/hostess to convey his/her gratitude in the form of small presents. The host may wish to get special gifts for the godparents of the baby. There are many resources in the library that the parents of the baby could refer to for gift ideas. Depending on their budget, there are plenty of choices easily available in the stores and online shops. Gifts are heart-warming; they make your guests feel very special. Gifts also convey messages of love and gratitude.

Christening Gown Buying & Care
A christening gown is an outfit traditionally worn by a child to a christening/baptism ceremony. Christening gowns are typically white and very long, and intricately ornate in design. The following offers some quick tips on buying and caring for a christening outfit.
Christening Gown Buying Tips
- Materials
Cotton, linen, and silk are three materials commonly used to make christening gowns. Cotton is inexpensive and washable. Linen christening gowns make very durable and beautiful family heirlooms. Silk christening gowns are very lustrous and comfortable.
- Color
Yes, white is standard, but even white doesn't have to be uniform. Ivory, cream, and similar variations on white will provide a different look.
- Era
A christening outfit can be modern or traditional. A Victorian-style christening dress is one option, or perhaps a Celtic or Irish christening gown. Or choose contemporary touches in frills, lace, and embroidery.
- Accessories
Bonnets, bibs, shoes, and other clothing accessories can enhance or accentuate the style of a christening gown. Use a floral band or appropriate hat style to complement a period gown.
- Other Details
Pay attention to christening gown lengths. A Cathedral-length christening gown would be dramatic. Appliqué work or colorful buttons can also distinguish a baptism dress.
Christening Gown Care
Another important consideration with christening gowns is washing. Most christening gowns are hand wash or dry clean only. Always follow the stated washing instructions.
If it is necessary for you to hand wash a christening gown, avoid placing it in direct sunlight to dry. To absorb excess water without wringing or twisting the garment, roll it in a clean white towel.
Wash christening outfits before storing them in preservation bags. Rinse and dry thoroughly, and avoid the use of starch or fabric softener.

Purification
One of the most symbolic elements of the christening ritual is when the baby has water sprinkled on the head. Catholics believe that by doing this, the child is reborn through the power of the Holy Spirit, cleansed of the stain Original Sin, and reborn through Christ's death and resurrection.
Most people raised in cultures in which Christianity is a dominant faith are familiar with the Doctrine of Original Sin. We are never more pure of heart and soul than when we are first introduced into this world. It is only after years of living in this fallen world that we become more "sinful", just in order to adapt.
Nevertheless, the Doctrine of Original Sin is a very significant pillar of many Christian denominations, so this part of christening traditions remains an important part of the ceremony.
